Familiarity – anyone who has edited audio in the past on an Apple device will find GarageBand very familiar, so there won’t be a steep learning curve. There are plenty of DAWs tailored specifically for podcasting, many of which we’ve already evaluated for you in this article, but GarageBand has two main considerations which make it a top contender for certain podcasters: It’s known in the industry as a beginner DAW, and it comes as standard with every Apple mac that is sold, which could account for its popularity. At its core, it’s all about recording and editing, so it works perfectly well for podcasting too – you just have to ignore some time signatures (more on this later).

  • Suggestions? Experiences from people who have moved from Audacity to something else? We don't make money (or try to) with the podcast, FWIW. I've also seen an add-on for Reaper that supposedly turns it into a podcast optimized program? It does seem pretty music oriented out of the box. I've also tried a trial version of Hindenburg, but also haven't spent enough time to know it yet and certainly not enough to buy it. But I have not used it enough to really see any advantages and get past the learning curve. I actually own Reaper (a long time listener heard me mention my itch and bought it for me as a "thank you for years of your podcast" gift. I've used Audacity so I know it, but I have an itch to try something "better." Better = easier, faster, most efficient editing, better sound, etc. Editing consists of editing out all the "uhs" and "ums" and mouth sounds, editing comments that aren't needed for the focus, adding in the intro, transition, and outro music clips (with a fade in and fade out) and trying to overall optimize and level the sound. I then take that WAV file and edit in Audacity. I typically record directly to the SD card in the board. Podcasts are in the 50 to 70 minute range, on average.

I currently use a Rodecaster Pro board, typically two hosts, Rode Podmics, headsets of course, and if we have guests with us they are also set up with Podmics and headsets and plugged into the board. We've got a podcast we've hosted since 2014, we don't market much but we do OK, 3000 - 9000 downloads per episode depending on the topic, average around 5000.
